Vermont Poor Farms Presentation with local author Jodi Lew-Smith

Local author Jodi Lew-Smith will be visiting to share her research on Vermont poor farms (which play an important role in her newest historical fiction release Asa James).

In 1797, Vermont put the responsibility on towns to “relieve, support and maintain their own poor”, and many towns responded by placing indigent, elderly and disabled Vermonters on poor farms. The last poor farm closed in 1968.
